In case you didn't see the article, here's the text of the article:

Water polo makes waves at Wheeler
Adam Carrington
Published: April 10, 2008
Swimming isn't the only thing Richard Tavernaro coaches at Wheeler High School. He's just formed a co-ed water polo team that is already competing with college-level squads.

The Wheeler club team, which has already attracted 42 players, tested their strength against college competition last weekend in the University of Georgia Classic at the Ramsey Center in Athens.

Although the Wildcats lost games to Georgia, North Carolina State and Tennessee, the games were all relatively close, making all three collegiate foes impressed by how far the Wildcats have progressed in a short period of time.

Wheeler kept it close in Sunday's game against Tennessee before falling, 11-8. The Wildcats dropped a 9-3 decision to Georgia to open the round-robin tournament before losing, 11-3, to a more experienced North Carolina State team.

With goalkeeper Richard Cornelius -- who Tavernaro has called upon in the past as one of his top divers -- unavailable last weekend, a member of the University of Florida's women's club team, who was in town looking for pickup games, filled in for a couple of matches.

Owen Sweitzer, a Wheeler swimmer and one of the co-founders of the water polo team, led the Wildcats by totaling three goals on the weekend. Alex Olbrych and Dillon O'Connell also chipped in with a couple of scores.

"It was actually a lot of fun," said Olbrych. "I found out new tricks I can use against other teams and figured out how to play defense. We just need to work harder so we can get better."

Water polo was something Tavernaro tried to organize 10 years ago when he was at North Cobb, but he couldn't get another interest and participation from the students. When he relocated to Wheeler this year, he discovered kids playing water polo in their neighborhood pool, and then one of his swimmers asked if he wanted to coach.

The word got out shortly after and Wheeler is fielding a team of mostly swimmers. Since the Wildcats are still a club team, they're permitted to recruit from other area schools. They also have students from Walton, Campbell and Hillgrove on the team.

"I would love to claim credit for starting water polo, but it was the kids that did it and they pulled me into it," Tavernaro said. "They really deserve the credit for getting it started."

Water polo is a similar sport to soccer and lacrosse in which it requires seven players from each team, including a goalkeeper, to be in the water. Since Wheeler plays co-ed, at least one female has to be in the water at all times.

Tavernaro said coaches from Wesleyan, Pace Academy and St. Pius X are helping Wheeler push water polo, hoping to get it sanctioned as a varsity sport by the Georgia High School Association in the near future. The four teams organized a fall league and played round-robin games every Wednesday. The Wildcats went undefeated in every game before falling to St. Pius in the championship.

Tavernaro knows quite a bit about water polo, but swimming is his expertise. He's sought help from experienced community player Karina Cordisco and Dynamo Water Polo Club coach Mark Lefkow.

Wheeler works out before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Central Aquatic Center and plays scrimmages on Sundays against teams who are available.

"Coach Tav has made it a reality to get it into public schools," said Patrick Stevens, the team's top defensive player. "We have to get more public schools to play it. We just need to get more schools to commit. The hope is to have it as a varsity sport next year."

4/6/08
What a great tournament...it was obvious to everyone how much we improved over the course of the weekend..we had so many favorable comments about how well we did against the college teams (and several offers to continue scrimmaging in the future)...

Though we didn't win any of the games, we came away with a great deal of respect - we scored a total of 14 goals against three Division I colleges...

I've added a few pictures from the weekend to the photo alum page...

Remember, since it's Spring Break, we will not be practicing next week...the next practice will be on April 15...

4/2/08
Our schedule has been changed a bit...our first game is now at 4:40 against UGA and the second game is still at 7:10, but against NC State

Remember, to be able to be in the tournament, I will need your dues as well.

We now have goals...thanks to Owen and John, who met Mark at the Dynamo Pool to transport the goals to the CAC, we now have a new (to us at least) set of floating goals.
